Camera traps have captured the Caucasian leopard four times in Kazakhstan's Ustyurt Nature Reserve between late October and December 2024, according to the Forestry and Wildlife Committee.
The good news is that from October 29 to December 21, 2024, camera traps recorded a Caucasian leopard four times on the territory of the reserve. These data confirm that the Ustyurt Nature Reserve continues to be an important habitat for this rare and endangered species, the committee says.
The monitoring project is a collaboration between National Geographic, the Biodiversity Research and Conservation Center, and the Kazakhstan Association for the Conservation of Biodiversity.
Officials note that the leopard's return signals a healthy recovery of the Ustyurt ecosystem.
