Kazakhstan’s largest offshore oil project, Kashagan, has reached a major milestone: the extraction of its first billion barrels of oil, Orda.kz reports.
The announcement was made by the project’s operator, NCOC (North Caspian Operating Company), a consortium of international and Kazakh firms. The milestone was recorded at 03:25 Atyrau time on July 4, nearly nine years after the start of commercial production in 2016.
The achievement coincides with the 25th anniversary of Kashagan’s discovery. NCOC confirmed that the billion-barrel total reflects cumulative output since the launch of full-scale industrial operations.
Located in the Caspian Sea, Kashagan is regarded as one of the world’s most technically challenging and costly oil fields to develop, due to high-pressure reservoirs, high hydrogen sulfide content, and offshore environmental conditions.
As previously reported, Kazakhstan exceeded its OPEC+ production quota in June. According to Reuters, daily output reached 1.88 million barrels — well above the 1.5 million-barrel limit.
However, the primary increase came from the Tengiz field, where Chevron is expanding production capacity.
