Today, the Legal Media Center reported that Radio Azattyq was fined under the article “Dissemination of False Information.” The reason was an incorrect translation of a September report published on the media portal.
The video in question concerned the trial of journalist Daniyar Adilbekov.
The Russian version says, "He faces eight years in prison," whereas the Kazakh version – "Oğan prokuror segiz jyl turme jazasyn suraldy," which translates as "The prosecutor requested eight years in prison."
Shymkent lawyer Alisher Turabayev filed a statement over the wording.
According to Turabayev, the prosecutor could not request a term during this period since the debate began on October 16,writes the Legal Media Center.
In court, Azattyq stated that the phrase in Kazakh was not false information but a technical translation error.
However, the court sided with Turabayev and ruled to hold Azattyq Radio accountable under the article "Placing and Dissemination of False Information." Azattyq received a fine – 184,000 tenge.
This is not the first case that Azattyq has lost to Turabayev. A year earlier, he had already filed a lawsuit.
At that time, he disagreed with the wording “Russia heads the CSTO” in an Azattyq article.
The lawyer won the case, and the media outlet was fined 103,500 thousand tenge.
