Qasym-Jomart Toqayev Meets with China’s CNNC Chief
Kazakhstan's President Qasym-Jomart Toqayev met with Shen Yanfeng, Director General of China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC), to discuss cooperation in nuclear energy, Orda.kz reports.
Toqayev highlighted Kazakhstan’s interest in CNNC’s expertise, given its leading role in China’s nuclear industry.
The Head of State informed Shen Yanfeng about Kazakhstan's plans to develop the industry, noting the importance of the recent decision to establish the Nuclear Energy Agency, Aqorda's statement says.
During the meeting, Shen Yanfeng outlined CNNC’s ongoing projects in China and abroad and discussed advanced nuclear technologies and training opportunities for Kazakhstani specialists.
In August 2024, CNNC expressed its readiness to construct a two-gigawatt nuclear power plant in Kazakhstan within seven years, estimating the project cost at $5.6 billion.
Aside from CNNC, other contenders for the project include Russia’s Rosatom, South Korea’s KHNP, and France’s EDF.
Previously, Kazakhstan agreed to sell nearly 1.3 trillion tenge worth of natural uranium concentrate to two Chinese companies.
