President Qasym-Jomart Toqayev received a report from Prosecutor General Berik Asylov on the investigation of high-profile criminal cases, including those involving torture, Orda.kz reports.
According to Aqorda, special prosecutors have sent 55 cases to court this year, resulting in convictions for 112 people. Another 80 cases are still under investigation.
Qasym-Jomart Toqayev was informed about the progress of the investigation into criminal cases of particular importance that have caused wide public outcry, affected the interests of the state, and included cases of torture, the presidential press service said.
It is quite likely that the discussion may also have touched on the defendants in the so-called Khorgos case.
In the summer of 2025, Talgat Tatubayev, a protégé of former Prosecutor General Kairat Kozhamzharov, was arrested on charges of torture. His colleague Olesya Keksel is also a suspect. Investigators are reviewing materials related to interrogations, sexual assaults, and witness intimidation.
Recently, the Prosecutor General’s Office announced the start of an investigation against Kairat Kozhamzharov himself, accusing him of abuse of office and money laundering.
Asylov also reported that over the past two years, the prosecutor’s office has returned assets worth 850 billion tenge to the state. These funds are being used to build about 400 social and municipal facilities.
He outlined new methods for detecting criminal proceeds and plans to redirect them into economic development. In this context, the Asset Return Committee will be renamed the Investor Protection Committee.
President Toqayev stressed the importance of fighting fraud, drug trafficking, domestic violence, and vandalism, while also underscoring that businesses must be protected from undue pressure through unfounded criminal cases.
