Prosecutor General: Criminal Cases on Torture in Colonies Decreased Fivefold

Surveillance cameras have been installed in the colonies, and incarcerated persons can report torture through special terminals. This was stated in an interview by the Prosecutor General Berik Asylov, Orda.kz reports.
This year, five cases of torture were registered; last year, there were 24. 17 people were convicted of torture committed in colonies.
We take a tough stance on torture. Particular attention is paid to preventing torture in the penitentiary system. Any signal from convicted persons about cruel treatment is considered through the prism of torture, Asylov stated.
He reported that duty prosecutors visit correctional facilities every day, and unannounced inspections are carried out at night.
Anonymous surveys have also begun among incarcerated persons. Continuous video surveillance, with 40,000 cameras, has been installed in all 78 colonies, allowing the situation to be monitored remotely.
The number of terminals for electronic requests has doubled.
