The Head of State was shown unique archival materials and historical documents related to the camp's history, Orda.kz reports.

From 1938 to 1953, thousands of women, unjustly convicted as “wives of enemies of the people,” were imprisoned at the Aqmola Camp.

Today, the ALZHIR complex stands on the site as a symbol of national remembrance.

Earlier that day, President Qasym-Jomart Toqayev laid flowers at the memorial and observed a moment of silence to honor the victims of political repression and famine.
