Archaeologists have discovered the ruins of a medieval city in Kazakhstan’s Jetisu region, believed to have been destroyed during the Mongol invasions of the 13th century, Orda.kz reports.
The find was announced by Olga Gumirova, executive director of the public foundation Hunters for Petroglyphs. She said the site was uncovered by chance and may be the remains of a long-lost city once located along the Silk Road.
It looks like we’ve found the medieval city everyone has been searching for! There are references to it in written sources. First, we noticed traces of brickwork in a quarry, then a tower that somehow survived, and later part of a wall — buried underground, but with melted medieval bricks visible, said Gumirova.
A team of researchers is preparing to begin full excavations to assess the historical and scientific value of the site.
If confirmed, the discovery could mark the identification of a previously unknown cultural monument in Kazakhstan.
