A jury in the Ulytau region found three police officers from the Janaarka district guilty of abuse of authority involving violence, Orda.kz reports.
According to the investigation, the incident took place on the night of August 14, 2024, when the officers assaulted a detainee in a restroom at the district police department. The victim sustained moderate physical injuries and experienced psychological distress.
Prosecutors requested a six-year prison term. The jury ultimately sentenced each of the officers to five years in prison. They are also barred from holding positions in public service and law enforcement for three years, the court stated.
The sentence was partially mitigated; two of the defendants have young children. At the same time, the court viewed the breach of their professional oath as an aggravating circumstance.
All three defendants denied wrongdoing and sought acquittal. However, the jury based its decision on witness statements, expert assessments, and physical evidence.
The verdict has not yet taken legal effect.
