Perizat Kairat Claims Abuse in Detention

Perizat Kairat, accused of embezzling billions, stated that she was injured by staff at a pre-trial detention center. According to her, on June 9, a guard allegedly slammed the cell door shut and trapped her in the doorway, Orda.kz reports.
Kairat filed a complaint with the prosecutor’s office. The case materials were forwarded to the Astana police department, which initiated a pre-trial investigation.
Police have already reviewed surveillance footage and questioned detention center staff. Preliminary findings indicate that Kairat's claims were not substantiated, as no act of violence was captured on video.
According to the results of initial investigative actions, the statements made by P. Kairat regarding bodily harm allegedly inflicted by staff when closing the cell door are not confirmed. This is evidenced by surveillance footage recorded at the time P. Kairat indicated as the incident in her complaint,the Astana police department's press service reported.
Nonetheless, the investigation is ongoing. A forensic medical examination has been ordered.
Preliminary hearings in Perizat Kairat’s case were held yesterday in an Astana court, where the defendant repeated her claims of abuse in detention.
