The department said that on November 3, staff from its Laboratory and Analytical Control Division carried out an on-site inspection after residents of Aqtau reported numerous seal carcasses washed ashore.
In cooperation with the Fisheries Inspection Department, during monitoring of the coastline from the village of Asan to Cape Bautino, carcasses of Caspian seals were found. Of these, 39 were located between Asan and the beach in Fort Shevchenko, and 73 between the beach and Cape Bautino, the statement read.
Officials collected seawater samples for laboratory testing and reported the incident to the emergency hotline 112.
