Energy Minister Almassadam Satkaliyev announced at a briefing that Kazakhstan intends to accelerate the construction of its first nuclear power plant unit, reports Orda.kz.
According to him, building one unit typically takes 10-12 years.
However, the Ministry plans to discuss expediting this timeline with official vendors.
We understand that technologies don't stand still, and there is experience in replicating various nuclear technologies. Even based on average global timeframes, we will raise the question with official vendors about the possibility of completing the first unit within eight years, said Satkaliyev.
The authorities will also soon determine the location of a second nuclear power plant.
This matter will be discussed with the public and environmentalists, after which the final decision will be submitted to the government for consideration. The power plant's capacity will depend on the region where it will be located, the Energy Minister detailed.
The possibility of building a third station is also being considered.
The projects will be handled by companies that will join the consortium.
