A new Netflix film directed by Miguel Angel Vivas explores the untold story of Spanish prisoners in GULAGs, Orda reports.
Currently wrapping up production in Spain's Basque region of Alava, "La Tregua" (The Truce) marks a historic collaboration between Spanish production company Plano a Plano and Kazakh firms Amanat Capital and UMAIFILM.
This joint venture represents Kazakhstan's debut on the Netflix platform.
The project brings together talent from both nations under Kazakh general producer Yerlan Bekkhozhin.
Vivas, known for directing "Money Heist," leads a cast featuring Spanish actors Aron Piper ("Elite") and Miguel Herran ("Money Heist") alongside Kazakh performers Altynay Nogerbek, Dina Tasbulatova, Sergey Ufimtsev, and Farabi Akkozov.
Spanish newspaper El Correo revealed in December 2024 that the story centers on Spassky Camp No. 99, a KarLag facility that housed prisoners of war, including Spanish internees. The narrative follows two soldiers from opposing sides of the Spanish Civil War who find themselves in the camp.
Production has utilized a purpose-built set in the Basque Country, meticulously recreating the 1930s-1950s KarLag environment. Local authorities plan to preserve these structures for tourism after filming concludes.
This film will help preserve crucial historical memory while showcasing Kazakhstan's culture globally. We expect it to resonate with audiences worldwide, says Bekkhozhin.
The decision to film in Spain rather than the Qaraganda region was primarily financial - Alava province offers filmmakers tax incentives of up to 70%, making it an attractive location for both series and feature productions.
The film is scheduled for release in 2025.
