Former President of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbayev visited the Republican Grand Mosque in Astana on June 21, Orda.kz reports.
Accompanied by his security detail, the 83-year-old visited during the day, appearing cheerful and in good health.
During his time at the mosque, Nazarbayev recited verses from the Quran in memory of his ancestors and deceased family members, and offered prayers (du'a) for peace, stability, and national unity.
In a brief address, he highlighted the mosque’s importance in the spiritual life of the nation and wished success to its clergy in strengthening both faith and harmony in society.
The mosque — Central Asia’s largest — was built in Astana at Nazarbayev’s initiative and opened on August 12, 2023. With a dome height of 83.2 meters and a diameter of 62 meters, the project cost investors over 100 billion tenge.
Informally, it is often referred to by the public as the "Nazarbayev Mosque."
