More Than a Ton of Medicines Smuggled to Almaty Under Guise of Cosmetics

At Almaty airport, customs officers detained more than a ton of medicines that had been smuggled under the guise of cosmetics, Orda.kz reports.
According to the Almaty Customs Department, the cargo arrived from India. The documents listed cosmetic products, but during inspection, officials found medicines — 39 items with a total weight of 1,324 kg. The customs value of the shipment was estimated at more than 5 million tenge.
Authorities are now conducting an inspection. Based on its findings, a decision will be made on who to hold accountable. False declaration is punishable by a fine of 25% of the value of the goods, as well as possible confiscation of the cargo.
Since the beginning of the year, Almaty customs has identified 17 cases of illegal transportation of goods containing narcotic substances, with a total weight of nearly 26 kg. All materials have been transferred to law enforcement agencies.
