Kazakhstan's online landscape is facing growing challenges with illegal content, prompting Minister of Culture and Information Aida Balayeva to address the public, Orda reports.
The Minister has highlighted a significant surge in problematic material across the country's digital spaces.
Minister of Culture and Information Aida Balayeva has asked Kazakhstanis to exercise awareness and caution on social media.
According to her, there has been a sharp increase in illegal content on the Kaznet.
Taking to Facebook, Balayeva emphasized the need for stronger content moderation.
She specifically called on website administrators and public page managers to bolster their fact-checking processes, curb the spread of unverified information, and swiftly remove illegal content.
I ask social media users, in turn, not to make rash actions and not to post content and comments that could legally lead to the blocking of the information source - the online platform, said Aida Balayeva.
While website blocking remains uncommon in Kazakhstan, the Minister revealed a trend: illegal content on Kaznet has nearly doubled between 2023 and 2024.
The problematic material ranges from terrorism and extremism propaganda to drug-related content and advertisements for online gambling and pyramid schemes.
Last year, 78,539 illegal materials were identified on online platforms, of which 24.3% were removed, Aida Balayeva.
The Minister did not go into further details about the remaining content.
