Kazakhstan has proposed the ancient rock-carved mosques of Mangystau for the UNESCO World Heritage List, Orda.kz reports.
Among them are Shopan-ata, with 12 rock-hewn rooms and prayer poles; Qaraman-ata, the only underground mosque in the region; and Shaqpaq-ata, cross-shaped with hermit cells and prayer halls.
The International Council on Monuments and Sites is now evaluating these shrines.
Culture Minister Aida Balayeva stressed their national importance, noting that if experts give a positive assessment, the mosques will be officially recognized as part of world heritage.
