Mangystau Region Akimat Comments on Mass Death of Caspian Seals

Specialists are taking water and soil samples to investigate the causes of the animals' death, reports an Orda.kz correspondent.
As reported earlier, seals were found on the Caspian Sea coast near Bautino in the Mangystau region. Local blogger Azamat Sarsenbaev says activists counted 151 dead seals that washed up on the shore.
According to authorities, 51 dead seals were found on October 24, and more than 100 were found on October 25-26. All were sent for examination.
Employees of the Institute of Hydrobiology and Ecology will conduct toxicological, histological and virological analyses. Currently, six specialists are at the scene. The discovered seal bodies are heavily decomposed. Currently, the remains are being collected, employees of local executive bodies, as well as the fisheries inspection department, the district police department, the veterinary inspection, the Institute of Hydrobiology and Ecology and the branch of the Republican Association of Fisheries "Qazaq Balyq" are working at the scene,

Monitoring is currently being carried out on the Caspian Sea coast, the Akimat added.
