The reasons remain unknown, as the bodies are already in an advanced stage of decomposition, Orda.kz reports.
On April 29, in the Tupkaragan district of the Mangystau region, local residents and Fisheries Committee staff counted 88 dead seals along the Caspian coastline.
The incident has been entered into the Unified Register of Pre-Trial Investigations.
According to RSE Kazhydromet, westerly winds in the area likely carried the carcasses to shore. Scientists from the Institute of Hydrobiology and Ecology observed that the animals were in an advanced stage of decomposition, rendering it impossible to collect samples for toxicological and pathological analysis.
Preliminary estimates suggest the deaths occurred 2–3 weeks ago, but the exact cause remains unclear. Local authorities, along with the Inspectorate, have organized the collection and removal of the remains.
Coastal monitoring is ongoing.
