The Committee of the Penal Correction System (KUIS) has confirmed the death of an incarcerated person in the Abay Region, Orda.kz reports.
A video appeal from relatives of inmates appeared online.
"People are in intensive care. We are not allowed to see them. Two have already died," said a woman in the video, identified as a relative an incarcerated person.
The Committee denied reports of a mass transfer of incarcerated persons to a hospital but confirmed one death.
The man, who had been serving a sentence for sexual assault, died of a stroke.
He sought medical attention at the facility’s infirmary, complaining of feeling unwell. After examination, he received medical assistance, and an ambulance was called immediately. Despite the measures taken, the inmate died in the hospital, the Committee stated.
About a month earlier, in Oskemen, a former police officer extradited from Türkiye also died in custody.
He was suspected of involvement in an international criminal group that protected illegal casinos. The detainee died before his trial began.
