A man in Shymkent has been sentenced to prison after being found guilty of inciting interethnic hatred during a livestream in April on the social media platform “Chatroulette,” Orda.kz reports.
According to investigators, the broadcast featured deliberate actions aimed at fueling ethnic discord. The court found him guilty under Part 1 of Article 174 of the Criminal Code — intentional acts to incite enmity between ethnic groups using internet platforms.
The stream was conducted from the defendant’s home. He did not deny guilt, admitted to the offense, and expressed remorse, hoping for a more lenient sentence. Nevertheless, the state prosecution insisted on imprisonment,
the court stated.
The court considered his admission of guilt and remorse as mitigating factors. No aggravating circumstances were identified. Despite this, the defendant was sentenced to two years and six months in prison.
The verdict has not yet entered into legal force.
