LRT Case: Talgat Ardan Sentenced in Absentia in Astana

The case was in the inter-district criminal court of Astana without the defendant. He is on the international wanted list, Orda.kz reports.
As the investigation established, on December 22, 2016, the former chair of the LRT LLP board illegally requested the first tranche of a loan for 257.6 million dollars from the State Development Bank of China. The funds were for the LRT construction project.
They were not used for their designated purpose.
On November 26, 2018, the bank's activities were forcibly terminated by an Almaty court. As a result, the project failed, the funds were not returned, and the damage to City Transportation Systems LLP amounted to over 85 billion tenge,the court announced.
The court found Talgat Ardan guilty and sentenced him to four years and eight months.
In 2023, he received seven years for budget fund embezzlement. Considering this, the judge totaled the sentence up to nine years with a lifelong ban on working in the civil service.
The former head of Astana LRT was also ordered to pay damages – 85 billion tenge.
