The Armenian Criminal Court of Appeals has ruled that the detention of “Tashir Group” president Samvel Karapetyan was unlawful, according to one of his lawyers, Liana Gasparyan, Orda.kz reports, citing Armenia News.
“The court determined that the detention of Samvel Karapetyan on June 18, 2025, was
unlawful, as a result of which he was illegally held in custody for more than nine hours,” Gasparyan wrote on her Facebook page.
According to Gasparyan, the Appeals Court thus confirmed another instance of illegality in this criminal case — the unlawful and unfounded detention of Samvel Karapetyan.
Before the appellate court deemed Samvel Karapetyan’s detention unlawful, he had been arrested in mid-June 2025 on charges of publicly calling for the usurpation of power amid tensions with the Armenian Apostolic Church.
His detention was later upheld by a lower court and followed by additional criminal inquiries, including money-laundering allegations. Following his June 2025 detention, Armenian authorities carried out further arrests, including senior clergy of the Armenian Apostolic Church and other figures.
