Kyrgyz MP Proposes Replacing Lenin Monument with National Leader's Statue
A Kyrgyz parliamentarian has called for removing Vladimir Lenin's monument from Bishkek's Old Square, Orda reports, citing Sputnik Kyrgyzstan.
Nurbek Sydygaliev, Vice Speaker of the Parliament, suggests replacing it with a statue of Turdakun Usubaliev, who served as the First Secretary of the Communist Party of the Kyrgyz SSR.
In 2020, the square was named after Turdakun Usubaliev. I believe that the Lenin monument should be replaced with a monument to Usubaliev. This is my proposal, and residents of the Kochkor region approached me with the same request. Everyone knows the contribution of Turdakun Usubaliev to the formation of the republic, stated Nurbek Sydygaliev.
The Vice Speaker's proposal extends beyond the monument replacement.
He also advocates simultaneously renaming four Bishkek districts and several villages nationwide.
