KMG Launches Two Oil Exploration Projects in Kyzylorda Region

KazMunayGas is launching two geological exploration projects in the Kyzylorda region. The company will study the South Turgay oil basin and assess the potential for shale oil near Kumkol, Orda.kz reports.
A meeting on the development of geological exploration was held in Kyzylorda with the participation of regional akim Nurlybek Nalibayev and KazMunayGas board chairman Askhat Khassenov. The discussion focused on geological research and KMG’s plans to replenish the region’s resource base.
The first project will be carried out in the South Turgay basin. KMG calls it Turgai Paleozoic No. 2. The program includes converting historical 2D seismic data into a 3D model covering 3,000 square kilometers. After the analysis, the company plans to drill a well to a depth of 4,500 meters.
The second project, Beles, will be located near the region’s largest field, Kumkol, and is focused on a new type of resource for the area — shale oil. As part of the project, the company plans to drill a 3,500-meter well and collect core samples from oil-bearing rocks for geochemical research.
