KazMunayGas Denies Reported Cyberattack, Says Incident Was Internal Security Drill

KazMunayGas has dismissed reports about a supposed Russian hacker attack on its digital infrastructure, the company’s press service told Orda.kz.
According to the national company, a “planned security check” was mistaken for an actual cyber incident.
In May 2025, KMG organized and conducted a planned internal event to check, evaluate and improve the level of awareness of employees in matters of information security. Particular attention was paid to the analysis of the efficiency and correctness of the response to threats by the Operational Information Security Center and the Operational Information Security Management Center of KMG,the statement said.
KMG clarified that it was a simulated hacker attack carried out for training purposes.
The exercise was sanctioned by the company and aimed at testing employee readiness for real threats.
The responsible persons and interested parties were notified of the training event. Based on the results of a comprehensive assessment of the event, targeted recommendations were sent to the divisions to further strengthen information security measures in the KMG group of companies,the company added.
KazMunayGas stressed that it will continue efforts to bolster cybersecurity across all its operations.
