KazMunayGas has started oil exploration at the Ozen Severny field in Kazakhstan’s Mangystau region, Orda.kz reports. The national company received a contract for the block’s development in June.
According to KMG, the first exploratory well is now being drilled at the Ozen Severny site. Two additional wells are planned — one reaching 2,000 meters, the other 1,650 meters deep.
The project is being implemented by KMG Barlau LLC, a subsidiary of KazMunayGas. Before drilling began, the company completed seismic surveys covering 400 square kilometers.
The first exploratory well will be a key milestone in the project’s implementation. Its results will help clarify the geological structure and confirm the area’s oil and gas potential,
KMG stated.
The Ozen North block is located in the Qarakiyan and Mangystau districts, about 20 kilometers from Zhanaozen. The project is considered complex and has drawn particular attention because it is being developed in line with a presidential directive.
During a working visit to Aqtau, President Qasym-Jomart Toqayev emphasized that KazMunayGas must continue strengthening the oil and gas sector in the region.
KazMunayGas also noted that this is not its only ongoing exploration effort. Deep exploratory wells have previously been drilled at the Turgay Paleozoi fields in the Qyzylorda region and at the Qarajar field in the Aqtobe region.
Currently, KMG is actively conducting exploration in five regions across Kazakhstan.
Meanwhile, China’s Sinopec spent billions of tenge exploring a potential field in Mangystau — only for the first well at the Sai-Utes site to turn out dry.
