The Bureau of National Statistics has released new data showing which regions in Kazakhstan are experiencing population decline, Orda.kz reports. Leading the list is the Abay region, where the population has fallen by nearly 1,500 people.
Since the start of 2025, Kazakhstan’s total population has grown by more than 50,000 people, driven mainly by natural growth (births minus deaths), which added 46,330 people. Net migration (arrivals minus departures) contributed just 3,801 people.
As of now, the country’s population stands at 20,333,530.
However, not all regions are seeing gains. The biggest losses were recorded in:
- Abay region: -1,409 people (out-migration of 2,093 exceeded natural growth of 684)
- North Kazakhstan region: -1,694
- Qostanay region: -1,360
- Aqtobe region: -996
- Jetysu region: -893
- Aqmola region: -297
Meanwhile, several regions are experiencing notable population increases:
- Almaty region: +8,633
- Turkistan region: +7,947
- Almaty city: +7,008
- Astana city: +5,522
Experts have also recently forecasted what Kazakhstan’s population could look like by 2050.
