Kazakhstan's Population Reaches 20.2 Million at Start of 2025

Kazakhstan's population hit 20,286,084 people as of January 1, 2025, Orda.kz reports.
According to the National Statistics Bureau, the country added 252,242 people over the year.
Natural growth accounted for 93% of the increase, while migration contributed just 7%.
The nation's largest cities showed the most dramatic growth:
- Astana – 6.91% increase
- Almaty – 2.86% increase
- Shymkent – 2.80% increase
Four regions also maintained populations over 1 million:
- Turkestan Region – 2.1 million residents
- Almaty Region – 1.5 million
- Jambyl Region – 1.2 million
- Qaraganda Region – 1.1 million
The statistics suggest a continuing urbanization trend, with rural populations declining.
Currently, only 7.5 million people remain in rural areas.
The previous year's demographic growth saw an increase of 247,768 people.
