Kazakhstan’s Intergas Sues Uztransgaz Over Gas Transit Dispute

The Kazakh gas operator Intergas Central Asia has initiated legal action against Uzbekistan’s Uztransgaz, demanding payment for the transit of Uzbek gas through Kazakhstan. The dispute concerns roughly $2 million, Orda.kz reports.
Oil and gas analyst Oleg Chervinsky said the claim is based on calculations prepared by Intergas specialists, after which the Kazakh side submitted the case to the AIFC International Arbitration Centre.
However, Tashkent firmly rejects the financial demands.
Uztransgaz’s lawyers insist the metering station is located on their side of the border and question the calculation method. They have also filed counterclaims,
Chervinsky noted.
Following the dispute, Intergas Central Asia temporarily suspended arbitration proceedings and brought in outside consultants to strengthen its position.
This is not the company’s first legal complication. Intergas Central Asia was recently fined 1.2 billion tenge after illegal wells were found in Aqtobe’s Shalkar district — a violation the court classified as environmental damage.
Earlier this year, a former senior manager of the company also received an extended prison sentence. He was found guilty of embezzling 279 million tenge during pipeline construction; the appeals court later reclassified the case as fraud and increased the sentence to six years.
