Geologists from Kazakhstan have collected samples from prospective mineral deposits in Afghanistan, Orda.kz reports, citing the Ministry of National Economy.
Mining was among the key points of discussion during Economy Minister Serik Zhumangarin’s recent visit to Afghanistan. According to the Ministry, geologists arrived in the country a week prior to the official delegation.
Specialists have collected 130 kg of ore samples in Nuristan province from potential deposits containing beryllium, lead and zinc. Now, the samples will be sent to Kazakhstan for more detailed analysis in laboratories. After receiving the results, the Kazakh side is ready to begin a more in-depth format of negotiations for further development of the deposits,
the MNE said.
In addition, Zhumangarin held talks with Afghanistan’s Minister of Communications and Information Technology, Najibullah Haqqani, where he discussed the possibility of Kazakh companies participating in infrastructure development.
He suggested that an optical cable be laid alongside the planned Torghundi–Herat railway line.
During the Kazakh-Afghan business forum held in Almaty last fall, both sides signed a roadmap aimed at increasing bilateral trade to $3 billion.
Currently, food products remain the main commodity traded between the two countries.
