During the 2025 irrigation season, Kazakhstan is set to receive approximately 3.7 billion cubic meters of water from the Syr Darya River, Orda.kz reports, citing the Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation.
Minister Nurzhan Nurzhigitov agreed on water volumes with counterparts from Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan.
As part of the agreement, 909 million cubic meters will be delivered via the interstate Dostyq Canal, and 975 million cubic meters will be directed to the Northern Aral Sea.
We are currently working to direct flood water to lakes and rivers and collecting it in reservoirs. But when it comes to the southern regions, water diplomacy is important. The sleds should be prepared in the summer, or, on the contrary, for the summer irrigation period of this year, we have been negotiating since last year. The water flowing into Kazakhstan along the Syr Darya River will be collected in the Shardara Reservoir and used to provide farmers in the southern regions. Last year, due to the efficient distribution of water, the introduction of water-saving technologies and timely negotiations with neighboring countries, we managed to meet the needs of farms for irrigation water. We intend to achieve this this year as well,
noted the Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation of the Republic of Kazakhstan Nurzhan Nurzhigitov.
Since October of last year to April 1, Uzbekistan sent 12.6 billion cubic meters of water to Kazakhstan.
