The Kazakh side has requested to temporarily suspend the project to establish a branch of Novosibirsk State University (NSU) in Almaty, reports Orda.kz.
NSU rector Mikhail Fedoruk told TASS that the idea has not been abandoned, stressing that Kazakh graduates of the university were the main initiators.
“We are not abandoning this idea. The main initiators of the creation of the branch are our graduates, natives of Kazakhstan. But for now it is frozen at the request, mainly, of the Kazakh side,” he said.
The branch was planned to be launched via KazNU, which apparently decided to halt the project. Orda.kz has sent a request to KazNU for clarification.
The Almaty branch was expected to train students in 20 natural science specialties, including oil and gas systems modeling, bioinformatics, nuclear medicine, and geophysics.
Unlike this project, the MGIMO branch in Astana is set to open.
