From January to March 2025, 77,300 children were born in Kazakhstan — a 16% decrease compared to the same period last year and the lowest figure recorded since early 2014, Orda.kz reports.

Analysts from Datahub attribute the decline this spring in part to seasonal factors.

Seasonal trends are clearly visible in the dynamics of live birth numbers. The highest figures are typically recorded at the end of the third quarter, and seasonal peaks were especially noticeable during the pandemic years of 2020 and 2021. However, despite quarterly fluctuations, in the past 11 full years, the number of births had never dropped below 90,000,
the report states, citing data from the National Statistics Office.

The decline was observed across the country, with the most significant decreases in Aqmola Region (-22%) and Jetisu Region (-20.1%).

In rural areas, the birth rate dropped by 18.1%, while in urban areas, the decrease was 14.2%.

The overall birth rate (per 1,000 population) fell to 15.39 — a decrease of 2.94 points compared to the first quarter of last year. This downward trend has been ongoing since 2015.

The number of deaths also declined, reaching 31,000, down 7.2%.

Natural population growth (the difference between births and deaths) fell by 20.7%, totaling 46,300 — the lowest level recorded since at least the beginning of 2014.
