Kazakhstan: Musicologist and Honored Artist Yuri Aravin Passes Away at 85

Honored Artist of Kazakhstan and member of the Union of Composers of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Yuri Aravin, has passed away at the age of 85, Orda.kz reports.
Minister of Culture and Information Aida Balayeva announced his death, calling it a profound loss for Kazakh culture.
Kazakhstan’s culture has suffered a great loss. Yuri Petrovich’s name meant a great deal to our country. He was one of the most prominent promoters of Kazakh folk music — a true devotee of culture who initiated numerous folklore expeditions, during which ancient musical works were rediscovered and transcribed,
Balayeva wrote on her Facebook page.
In the 1970s, Aravin created a series of television and radio programs dedicated to Kazakh music, folk composers, and akyns. His work played a crucial role in preserving and popularizing national folklore.
Yuri Aravin was known not only as an outstanding researcher but also as an inspiring teacher who nurtured a generation of talented students.
A deeply intelligent man, endlessly devoted to Kazakhstan — that’s how we will remember him. I extend my sincere condolences to his family, friends, students, and colleagues,
Balayeva added.
