Kazakhstan: Growth, Migration, and Birth Rate

As of October 1, 2024, the population was 20,223,218. 12,704,977 live in cities, and 7,518,241 live in rural areas, Orda.kz reports, citing the National Statistics Bureau.
In the first nine months of this year, 278.7 thousand children were born in Kazakhstan, and 99.5 thousand people passed away. A natural population growth of 179.2 thousand people has been noted.
The highest birth rates were recorded in the Turkestan region (25.04 people per 1000 people), the Mangystau region (24.84), and Shymkent (23.68). The North Kazakhstan, East Kazakhstan, and Kostanay regions have a high mortality rate due to the age structure of their populations.
Over the past six months, 95 thousand marriages and 29.3 thousand divorces have been registered.
The number of people arriving was 20,383, the number of people leaving was 10,201, and the migration balance was 10,182.
There is a steady increase in migration, both external and internal. From January to September, 20,383 people arrived in the country, while 10,201 left. Compared with the same period in 2023, the number of arrivals increased by 6.5%, while the number of departures decreased by 19.9%. The country's main migration exchange occurs with the CIS countries.
The number of people moving across regions increased by 47.4% compared to last year.
The leading cities where people move are Astana (52,853 people), Almaty (26,157 people), Shymkent (5,948 people), and the Almaty region (765 people).
