Kazakhstan: Every Fifth Incarcerated Woman with Child
Human rights activists have expressed concern about the conditions for women in Kazakhstan's prisons, Orda.kz reports.
Aiman Umarova, a member of the coordinating council under the Human Rights Commissioner, says there are currently about 2.5 thousand women in six correctional facilities in Kazakhstan. And Almost 500 are mothers with young children.
The main problems include overcrowding in institutions, a lack of specialized conditions for mothers, limited access to quality medical care, especially for pregnant women, and insufficient rehabilitation and resocialization programs, Umarova emphasized.
Human rights activists believe a fundamental question arises: "What is more important, the child's rights or punishing the mother?"
Existing prisons are not suitable for mothers with children.
To improve conditions, experts propose creating a new rehabilitation and social adaptation program, improving the quality of medical care, especially for pregnant women, and providing the opportunity for psychological support.
