Kazakhstan Dams Up to Stay Ahead of Floods

The Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation, together with local authorities, are implementing 56 projects to protect six regions from spring floods, Orda.kz reports, citing the department's press office.
The flood protection zone covers 84 settlements across the Aqmola, Aqtobe, West Kazakhstan, Pavlodar, North Kazakhstan, and Kostanay regions, home to approximately 580,000 people.
As part of the initiative, authorities plan to construct 310 kilometers of dams. So far, around 40% of the work has been completed.
Yerbolat Ibraikhanov, the Vice Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation, reported that 1,502 hydraulic structures were inspected in collaboration with the Akimats and the Ministry of Emergency Situations.
Following the inspections, facility owners were advised to address the identified issues. To prepare for potential floods, water is being released from reservoirs in the northern, western, eastern, and central regions of the country, he said.
These large-scale preparations should minimize the consequences of floods and safeguard lives and property.
