Construction of the Omsk–Maikapshagay international highway, connecting Kazakhstan, Russia, and China, has been completed in the East Kazakhstan region. The final section of the route — a 415-kilometer stretch from Kalbatau to Maikapshagay — was officially opened to traffic today, Orda.kz reports.
The project was carried out under a direct order from the President of Kazakhstan as part of the national program to modernize transport and logistics infrastructure.
The new road forms part of the Western Europe–Western China international transport corridor, significantly increasing traffic capacity and offering the shortest and safest route between China and Russia through Kazakhstan.
As part of the project, seven bridges and more than 200 culverts were constructed. The highway will be maintained by the contractor for two years.
Governor of East Kazakhstan Nurymbet Saktaganov emphasized that the new route will also support small and medium-sized business development along the corridor.
Plans are already underway to build refueling stations, cafés, and hotels along the route.
This is truly a major accomplishment by our contractors and road builders, thanks to whom the capacity of this highway has increased. Most importantly, road safety has improved,
said Nurymbet Saktaganov.
The project began in 2017, and improvement work on certain sections will continue until the end of this year.
Members of the Majilis representing the East Kazakhstan and Abay regions attended the opening ceremony.
