Kazakhstan and China will work together to address long-standing congestion issues at their shared border. On May 23, delegations from both countries visited the Nur Joly and Khorgos checkpoints to assess the situation firsthand, Orda.kz reports.

Zhandos Duisembiyev, head of the State Revenue Committee, represented Kazakhstan, while Minister of Customs Sun Meijun led the Chinese side. Following inspections, both parties agreed to increase the daily throughput of freight vehicles.

Starting July 1, China will allow up to 750 trucks per day to pass through, with that number rising to 1,000 in September. At the Kalzhat checkpoint, capacity has already been raised to 250 trucks per day and will reach 300 in June. The countries also agreed to install additional inspection systems, accelerate document processing, and reduce repeat inspections by recognizing each other’s X-ray scans.

Plans are also in place to expand the bridge and traffic lanes at Nur Joly and to hold regular bilateral meetings to track progress. These measures aim to ease delays, reduce queues, and boost trade between the two countries.

Additionally, the 24-hour operation of the Nur Joly and Khorgos checkpoints has been officially extended through June 30, 2026.

A week earlier, First Deputy Prime Minister of Kazakhstan Roman Sklyar visited the Nur Joly checkpoint. He inspected its infrastructure, digital systems, and cargo processing facilities, and instructed officials to accelerate modernization efforts and implement IT solutions at the border.
