The government has allocated reserve funds to support the development of the Kazakh Research Institute of the Caspian Sea, Orda.kz reports.
Created on the instructions of President Qasym-Jomart Toqayev, the institute focuses on studying the Caspian’s environmental challenges. Its work includes assessing fish stocks, developing conservation methods, investigating the causes of mass seal deaths, and protecting the species’ population.
Researchers monitor the sea’s hydrology, water levels, and climate change impacts, as well as water quality and biodiversity in Kazakhstan’s sector of the Caspian. The new funding will strengthen laboratory capabilities in hydrobiology, hydrochemistry, hydrometeorology, and satellite monitoring.
Since 1985, the Caspian Sea’s level has dropped by three meters. Oceanologists warn the decline will continue in 2025, with evaporation potentially lasting for the next 25 years.
