Tasbolat Ibrashev, a Russian citizen of Kazakh origin who was featured in a widely circulated international media photo, was killed in Ukraine on February 3, Orda.kz reports, citing journalist Viktor Shatskikh's Facebook post.
The iconic photograph, taken in August 2008, captured Ibrashev as an armed soldier standing in front of a Georgian military convoy near Gori.
For years, the soldier in the photo was mistakenly believed to be from Buryatia. In 2019, he was identified as Ibrashev, who was serving as a contract soldier in Russia's 58th Army at the time.
Ibrashev was born on January 16, 1984, in the village of Akkistau in Kazakhstan's Atyrau region. His family moved to Astrakhan, Russia, in 1986.
After the 2008 incident, he received significant media attention and even participated in a student meeting at a university in Atyrau during a visit in January 2020.
Before the war in Ukraine, Ibrashev lived a civilian life in Astrakhan. In September 2023, he voluntarily signed a contract with the Russian army to fight in Ukraine, where he was ultimately killed.
