The NCOC consortium, which operates the Kashagan oil field, has paid the Kazakh government 3.6 billion tenge — the amount imposed for environmental violations, Orda.kz reports.
According to the Atyrau Regional Prosecutor’s Office, the consortium repeatedly flared raw gas without the proper environmental permits. Once this was uncovered, legal action was taken against NCOC. The investors argued that the case should be tried abroad, but the court rejected their claim.
The lawsuit was upheld in January.
Ultimately, despite disputes with Kazakh authorities, the foreign investors behind Kashagan accepted the fine.
On July 25, prosecutors confirmed that the full amount had been paid.
