Karakalpak activist Koshkarbay Toremuratov received refugee status in Poland, Orda reports, citing his post on social media.
In September 2022, Uzbek authorities summoned Toremuratov and activist Zhangeldy Zhaksymbetov for questioning, accusing them of undermining Uzbekistan's constitutional order following Karakalpakstan protests.
Three other Karakalpak activists were later detained in Kazakhstan, all facing extradition to Uzbekistan and criminal charges.
The Karakalpak diaspora urged Kazakhstan's government to protect the detained activists. After a year in Almaty pre-trial detention, three received refugee status in the USA.
After nearly two years in Poland, Toremuratov received official refugee status.
