Human rights activist Aqylbek Muratbai was released today after spending exactly one year in an Almaty pre-trial detention center, reports Orda.kz.
Muratbai has been a prominent voice advocating for the rights of the Karakalpak people.
Upon his release on February 15, Muratbai recorded a video explaining that his detention was based on "a false extradition request from Uzbekistan."
He expressed particular concern for his family's hardship during his imprisonment, noting that the ordeal had been more difficult for them than for himself.
He credited his release to the collective efforts of human rights activists, journalists, diplomats, and concerned citizens.
Muratbai, who has resided in Almaty for many years, was initially detained on February 15, 2024, following an extradition request from Uzbekistan.
The prosecutor's office subsequently extended his extradition arrest for one year on March 19.
His situation became more precarious when Kazakhstan denied his refugee status application on September 12, raising concerns among human rights advocates about his possible extradition to Uzbekistan.
Throughout his career, Muratbai has consistently advocated for Karakalpak rights, including supporting those forced to leave their homeland.
