Interior finishing work is almost complete. Escalators and elevators have been installed, along with ventilation, video surveillance, and fire safety systems.
Tunnel work is also progressing. The left running tunnel has been fully completed, and rail installation in the right tunnel is expected to begin soon using continuous welded rail technology. Around 400 specialists are working on the project. Construction is scheduled for completion by the end of the first half of 2026.
Kalkaman station is located in Almaty's Nauryzbay district and will be built 18 metres underground. Officials say that it will provide residents in the city’s western areas with faster access to other parts of Almaty. The line is planned to be extended to the Barlyk market in the future.
The city has also announced plans to build 45 km of light rail transit (LRT) lines and 5.2 km of metro track on the Kalkaman–Barlyk section by 2030 at a total cost of 344 billion tenge. The city is also considering developing a second metro line from Zhibek Zholy to the airport, as well as a third line from Sairan to the new city of Alatau.
