In his first senior-level match, 18-year-old Sherkhan Kalmurza, goalkeeper for Almaty’s Kairat, was ranked among UEFA’s top five saves of the Champions League opening round, Orda.kz reports.
Kalmurza denied Pedro Gonçalves in a one-on-one in the fifth minute and later saved a penalty from Sporting captain Morten Hjulmann.
His performance earned him a spot alongside keepers from Galatasaray, Napoli, Newcastle, and Sporting.
Despite his heroics, Kairat lost 4–1 to Sporting in Lisbon. Injuries to two senior goalkeepers meant Kalmurza started, making history as one of the youngest Champions League goalkeepers.
