Journalist Nurtaza Kadyrniyazov has been detained in Almaty. Blogger Abzal Dostiyar reported the detention on Facebook, Orda.kz reports.
According to Dostiyar, police arrived at the journalist’s home and escorted him to the Auezov District Police Department.
"When he called, he managed to say that someone had probably filed a complaint against him. Nurtaza aga (term used to adress one's male senoir - Ed.) is a PhD candidate in philosophy — an educated, cultured man. He is incapable of saying anything that would offend someone's honor or dignity,
Dostiyar wrote.
Kadyrniyazov’s most recent public appearance was an interview with journalist Koishybek Mubarak, where he discussed the visa-free regime with China and cited figures claiming nearly one million Chinese citizens entered Kazakhstan.
Kadyrniyazov is the former editor of the opposition newspaper Dat and is widely known for his public stance against the construction of the nuclear power plant.
