Large-scale efforts are underway in the Jetisu region to finally resolve chronic congestion on the Chinese border and dramatically increase crossing capacity, Orda.kz reports.
At a government meeting, regional akim Beibit Isabayev presented an updated development concept for the Khorgos Hub cross-border center. He stated that the region is attracting investment, upgrading infrastructure, and expanding cargo-handling capabilities.
Across the two special economic zones — Khorgos–Eastern Gate and the Khorgos ICBC — 40 projects worth 76 billion tenge have already been completed, creating over 2,000 jobs.
By the end of 2027, the region plans to launch 65 additional projects valued at 1.1 trillion tenge, expected to create more than 9,000 jobs.
At the KTZE–Khorgos Gateway dry port, two railway tracks were modernized, and eight new ones were built. A total of 16 tracks are now in operation, increasing terminal throughput by 50%.
Meanwhile, SKYHANSA has received an 800-hectare plot for the construction of an international cargo and passenger airport. Design and cost documentation for engineering infrastructure is currently being prepared.
Special attention is being given to the Nur Joly checkpoint, which has long struggled with lengthy queues.
Officials are expanding capacity, improving traffic flow, and digitizing operations. A 24/7 operating schedule and electronic queuing system are already in place.
As a result, the throughput capacity has doubled to 1,200 vehicles per day,
Isabayev said.
