The Japanese government is preparing to hold a summit with five Central Asian countries on December 19–20 in Tokyo, Orda.kz reports.
Vice President of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party, Taro Aso, announced preparations for the summit at a meeting of the parliamentary group responsible for strengthening relations between Japan and Central Asia.
Over the past six months, Russia, China, the United States, and other countries have already held summits with Central Asian states. From a diplomatic perspective, it is crucial that Japan successfully host a similar summit, Aso stated.
According to Nippon.com, separate bilateral meetings between Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi and regional leaders are planned.
The summit was planned for Kazakhstan last August, but was cancelled due to a powerful earthquake off the coast of Japan.
The government of then-Prime Minister Fumio Kishida was forced to respond.
It's unclear whether President Toqayev will fly to Tokyo in the coming weeks. Aqorda has yet to announce plans for the summit.
